3 Asphalt Shingle Alternatives for Florida Roofs: Which Fits Your Home?

2026-10-06 · Noland's Roofing

For a Florida roof replacement, metal and tile are alternatives to asphalt shingles worth comparing. A low-slope membrane is a third option for roof sections that need a different kind of covering. Start with which systems fit each part of your roof, then compare the complete installed proposals. There is no single winner for every home.

If you are shopping in Clermont or elsewhere in Noland's Central Florida service area, use this shortlist before choosing a material or collecting bids. Noland's publishes this guide and offers roofing services. The numbered options are organized by roof type, not ranked by quality, price or a paid placement. Manufacturer links explain system differences; they do not imply Noland's installs every named product.

Compare the three options at a glance

Asphalt shingle alternatives: fit, tradeoff and first check
OptionWho should consider itMain tradeoff to resolve
Metal roofingOwners who want a metal profile and can compare a specific panel systemPanel and fastening details vary; verify the exact system and slope
Concrete or clay tileOwners who prefer tile and will resolve structural suitability firstStructure, underlayment and attachment must be part of the decision
Low-slope membraneOwners evaluating a low-slope addition, porch or other suitable sectionA separate covering and drainage scope, including its connection to the main roof

Our comparison uses four criteria: suitability for the roof, appearance, the complete work scope and the documents needed to maintain or repair the chosen system. These are decision criteria, not scores based on unverified lifespans or statewide price averages.

1. Metal roofing: compare the panel system, not just the word “metal”

Consider it if: you want the appearance of metal and are ready to compare a named profile, finish and attachment method against the shingle proposal.

Metal bids can describe different systems. McElroy Metal's standing-seam guide explains concealed-fastener panels and distinguishes snap-together from mechanically seamed profiles. Its exposed-fastener slope guidance shows why panel shape, seams and fastener details matter when selecting a roof covering.

The tradeoff: two proposals labeled “metal roof” may specify substantially different assemblies. Ask each bidder to identify the profile and how it suits the measured slope of your roof. Do not apply one panel's minimum slope to every metal system.

Before requesting a quote: choose an appearance you would accept, then ask for the product name, finish, fastening method, included flashing and written maintenance guidance. If future repairs are a concern, ask how replacement panels and a compatible finish would be obtained. Get any required community material or color approval before ordering.

For the closer two-way comparison, read metal roofing versus shingles in Florida. Noland's metal roofing service is the next step for a project-specific discussion.

2. Concrete or clay tile: settle the structure and layers underneath

Consider it if: you prefer a tile roof's appearance and will evaluate the selected system with the existing structure before committing to a conversion.

Eagle Roofing's concrete-tile FAQs identify an engineer as the person who can determine whether a structure supports the weight or needs reinforcement. That assessment matters more than whether a similar house down the street has tile.

The tradeoff: the visible tile is only part of the work. The FRSA–TRI Florida High Wind Tile Installation Manual covers underlayment, flashing and attachment details for concrete and clay systems. Ask the bidder which documents apply to the selected product and your roof.

Before requesting a quote: ask who will assess structural suitability and how any required reinforcement is scoped. Request the tile manufacturer and profile, underlayment, flashing and attachment system in writing. For an existing tile roof, have the proposal state whether it supplies new tile or considers existing tile for reuse, and how breakage or unavailable matching pieces will be handled.

An intact-looking tile surface does not answer every question about the assembly beneath it. Compare the proposed work with the inspection findings. Our tile-versus-shingle guide goes deeper, and tile roofing services cover repair and replacement discussions.

3. Low-slope membranes: an option for the section that needs them

Consider it if: the project includes a low-slope section, such as an addition or porch, whose covering needs to be evaluated separately from the main roof.

This is a conditional alternative, not a recommendation to replace every pitched shingle roof with a membrane. GAF's low-slope shingle bulletin says almost all of its shingles can be installed down to 2:12 when their instructions are followed, with extra requirements below 4:12. That is GAF-specific guidance, not permission for every shingle or property.

GAF also publishes separate TPO membrane and asphaltic membrane product families. Ask your roofer which exact system, if any, suits the section being assessed.

The tradeoff: the project needs clear boundaries and a drainage plan. GAF's roof-drainage guidance explains the role of slope and drainage components in moving water off a roof. A new covering alone is not a proposal for correcting every drainage issue.

Before requesting a quote: ask for each section's slope, named assembly, drainage work and connection to adjoining coverings. Request a separate assessment of repeated leaks or standing water. Read our flat-versus-pitched roof guide for the section-by-section worksheet. Noland's documents commercial low-slope services; contact the team to confirm eligibility and the proposed system for a residential addition.

When keeping shingles belongs on your shortlist

Changing material is optional when a suitable shingle replacement addresses your goals. Keep a complete shingle proposal as the comparison baseline if you like the appearance and do not have a specific reason to convert. Our architectural-versus-3-tab guide covers choices within that category.

If a leak triggered your search, begin with an inspection and the repair-or-replace decision. Buying a different covering before understanding the problem can leave the most important scope question unanswered.

A quote checklist for a Florida material change

Send the same brief to each bidder. It makes omissions easier to spot:

  1. Roof sections: identify the main roof, additions and transitions; request measurements and slope for each.
  2. Existing conditions: ask what was inspected and what remains unknown until removal.
  3. Removal and structure: identify tear-off, disposal, deck allowances and any separate structural assessment or reinforcement.
  4. Named system: request the covering, supporting layers, flashing, fastening and drainage scope.
  5. Documents: request applicable approval and installation documents. The Florida Product Approval database lets you look up the submitted product; ask the contractor to explain its fit for your property.
  6. Completion and changes: put permit and inspection responsibilities, cleanup, exclusions and concealed-damage approval in writing.
  7. Warranty and upkeep: ask for the manufacturer's terms and the installer's workmanship coverage separately, including exclusions and required maintenance.

Compare total installed proposals after these questions are answered. We do not publish a universal conversion price, promised service life, storm-proof rating or guaranteed insurance savings for these alternatives.

Quick answers

What are the alternatives to asphalt shingles in Florida?

Metal and concrete or clay tile are options to investigate for a suitable roof. Membrane roofing belongs in the shortlist for low-slope sections, rather than as an interchangeable covering for every pitched roof. The exact product, slope, structure and installation documents determine suitability.

What is the cheapest alternative to asphalt shingles?

This guide does not establish a cheapest option. Compare written installed quotes for the same roof sections, removal, deck repairs, flashing and permit responsibilities. A material-only price or a shingle estimate does not price a metal, tile or membrane conversion.

Can I replace my asphalt shingles with tile?

Possibly, after the selected tile system and supporting structure are evaluated. Ask who will determine structural suitability and whether reinforcement is needed before ordering. A neighboring tile roof does not establish that your home can support the same assembly.

Can the main roof and a low-slope addition use different materials?

Yes, a proposal can specify different suitable systems for different sections. Ask for each section's measured slope, product and scope, plus a clear detail for the connection between coverings. Confirm the exact assembly is suitable for each section.

Is a metal or tile roof automatically better in a hurricane?

The material name alone does not establish performance for your property. Request the applicable product approval and installation documents for the exact assembly, including attachment and roof conditions. This guide makes no storm-proof guarantee.

Does Noland's online estimator price these alternatives?

The online estimator is a planning starting point for asphalt-shingle replacement. Metal, tile and low-slope work need separate project-specific quotes. An inspection and written scope are needed to establish conditions that aerial imagery cannot show.
