What soffit and fascia do

Soffit closes the underside of the roof overhang; fascia is the outward-facing board along the roof edge, and it's usually what your gutters are fastened to. Some soffit panels are vented to let the attic take in air. An unvented attic works differently, so adding vents is not a universal repair. Together they keep water, wind and animals out of the eave and the attic above it.

Signs your soffit or fascia needs repair

Soffit panels sit in a channel held by trim, not nailed through to the deck the way shingles are. Wind under the overhang pushes up and pops them out of the track. The roof above can be intact, which is why water or animals can get into the attic after a storm that looked harmless.

Soft, peeling or rotted fascia boards

Peeling or bubbling paint along the roofline, dark staining, or wood soft enough to dent with a thumb usually means water has been getting behind the paint. Rotted fascia board repair starts with finding where that water comes from, often the gutter or the drip edge above it. (If you searched for “facia repair,” this is the same board.)

Wasps, birds, squirrels or rats in the eave

A gap at a loose panel or a rotted corner is an easy way into the attic. Closing it means fixing the opening and the material around it, not just covering the hole.

Gutters pulling away from the fascia

When the gutter hangers stop holding, the board behind them is often the problem. Have the gutter, the fascia and the roof edge checked together, since a photo of the symptom alone doesn't show which one failed first.

Repair or replace: how we decide

Repair it if the damage is limited to a few panels or one fascia board and the wood behind it is sound. Replace the full run when rot has spread along the board, the panels are brittle from sun, or you're replacing the roof or gutters anyway. Our technician photographs the run so you can see which it is.

• Section repair: replace the damaged panels or board length and tie the new material into the sound run on either side.
• Full run: replace a whole side of the house when the damage repeats along it or a patch would not hold.
• Rafter tails and drip edge: if the wood behind the fascia is soft, or the drip edge above it is letting water in, that work is part of the scope. We photograph it and price it before it's done.

Ask for photos and a written change price before approving any concealed-damage work found once the old material is off.

Aluminum, vinyl and wood: what we repair

Both aluminum and vinyl resist rot. Aluminum handles sun and heat well but can dent in hail. Vinyl comes in more styles but can fade or turn brittle after years of hard sun. Gutters hang on the fascia, and the drip edge laps over it. When one of the three fails, water often ends up in the other two.
