Inland damage does not announce itself
Most roofing content is written about coastal Florida, where the roof gets torn at. Ocala is an hour from either coast and the failure mode here is completely different. There is no salt load, and the sea breeze that cools the coast every afternoon does not reach Marion County. What you get instead is hail and sustained heat, and both of those attack the surface of the shingle rather than lifting it.
That matters because neither leaves the kind of damage a homeowner notices. Hail does not usually rip shingles off — it bruises them, breaks the granule bond and exposes the asphalt mat underneath to UV that it was never meant to see. The roof looks unchanged. It just starts aging several times faster than it should, and the first real symptom arrives years later as a leak in a roof that "was fine."
Heat compounds it. An attic that runs hot all summer cooks the shingle from below while the sun works on it from above. Same result: a roof that is chronologically young and functionally old.
So the first thing we do on a Marion County inspection is look for granule loss at the downspouts and soft dimpling across the field, and check the soft metal — vents, drip edge, flashing — because that is where hail leaves a mark you can actually measure.
The question worth asking out loud
Repair or replace is usually framed as a technical question. Most of the time it is really a horizon question: how long do you need this roof to last?
We ask it directly, particularly around Belleview, Summerfield and the southwest Ocala communities, where a lot of the homeowners we quote are not shopping for a roof that outlives them. How do I know if I have hail damage? Nothing looks broken.
