| Pitch | Rise relative to horizontal run. Increasing pitch increases surface area over the same horizontal projection. A roof with different pitches needs a calculation for each section. |

Roof size — common questions
How do I measure my roof without getting on it?
Start with your address to obtain an aerial estimate of roof area and pitch where imagery is available. Check which roof sections are included and confirm the measurement and project scope with the contractor. You do not need to climb onto the roof; imagery cannot establish hidden roof conditions.
What is a roofing square?
100 square feet of roof area. Roofers quote material in squares because bundles are sold that way — a 2,000 square foot roof is 20 squares.
Is my roof the same size as my house's floor area?
No. Roof surface follows the sloped roof, while living area counts indoor floor space across all stories. Garages, covered porches, overhangs and pitch change the roof area. A multi-story home's roof can be smaller than its total living area; measure the roof rather than applying a fixed multiplier to floor space.
What is effective square footage?
Noland's published asphalt-shingle estimator pricing basis adds 15% to measured roof area. This is a pricing allowance, not additional roof surface, a guaranteed correction for measurement error or a complete product-specific material order. Metal, tile and repair work require separate quotes.
