| Measured area | The actual roof surface, in square feet, as measured from above. Bigger than the house's footprint because of overhangs and pitch. |
| Roofing square | 100 square feet of roof. Material is sold and quoted this way, so a 2,400 sq ft roof is 24 squares. |
| Pitch | How steep the roof is. A steeper roof carries more surface area over the same footprint, and is slower and more expensive to work on. |
| Effective area | Measured area plus 15% waste — the offcuts at hips, ridges and valleys. This is the number Noland's prices on. |

How do I measure my roof without getting on it?
Enter your address. The calculator measures roof area from recent satellite imagery of your property and reads the pitch, so nobody has to climb anything. It takes about thirty seconds and costs nothing.
What is a roofing square?
100 square feet of roof area. Roofers quote material in squares because bundles are sold that way — a 2,000 square foot roof is 20 squares.
Is my roof the same size as my house's floor area?
No, and it is always larger. A roof covers the footprint plus the overhangs, and pitch adds more area on top of that — a steeper roof holds more surface over the same footprint. That is why measuring beats estimating from house size.
What is effective square footage?
Measured roof area plus 15% waste, which covers the offcuts at hips, ridges and valleys and absorbs the small undercount inherent in satellite measurement. Noland's prices on effective square footage, not measured.
