Florida gutter guards: which type fits a hard downpour
2026-11-02 · Updated 2026-11-02 · Noland's Roofing
A gutter guard does not make a small gutter bigger. On most Florida homes we suggest a guard on a 6-inch seamless gutter with 3x4 downspouts. A 6-inch gutter carries about 110 gallons a minute and a 5-inch gutter about 74. A guard on the smaller size can still overflow in a Gulf downpour.
Homeowners search "best gutter guards for Florida" because oak leaves, pine needles and shingle grit fill open troughs between storms. The right guard depends on the trees over the roof and on the rainfall the gutter has to carry. Noland's Roofing installs guards with the gutter, from the Clermont office at (352) 242-4322 and the Orange City office at (386) 456-6500. Since 2011. BBB Accredited · A+. Greg Noland, Founder.
How the common guards compare
These are the types homeowners are shown. None of them adds capacity. Size the gutter and the downspout first, then pick a guard that matches the debris.
| Guard | What it is meant to stop | Where it struggles in Florida |
|---|---|---|
| Micro-mesh | Small leaves and shingle grit | Pine needles can sit on top and need a rinse |
| Screen | Large leaves | Needles and small seeds pass through the holes |
| Surface-tension hood | Leaves that slide off the nose | A short, hard downpour can shoot past the slot |
| Foam insert | Easy to drop into an old gutter | Holds damp debris against the metal |
A hood that looks clean from the ground can still send water over the nose when the roof dumps a valley into one spot. That is why the Pensacola page walks through Hurricane Sally's rainfall and the 6-inch versus 5-inch math: seamless gutters in Pensacola. The same sizing is on the gutter installation page.
Guards, fascia and soffit
Overflow that misses a guard runs down the fascia board the gutter is screwed to, then into the soffit. If the board is soft, a new guard on the old gutter will not hold. Read soffit and fascia repair before you pay to cover a trough that is already pulling away. City pages for Clermont, Lakeland, Tampa and Deltona show how that edge looks in each place.
What we suggest you ask for
Ask for the gutter size, the downspout size, where the water discharges, and whether the fascia can hold the new hangers. A written recommendation should say if a repair is enough. If a repair will fix it, we will tell you. We will not recommend new gutters you do not need.

Quick answers
What gutter guard is best in Florida?
The one that matches the debris and still lets a 6-inch gutter carry the downpour. Micro-mesh handles small leaves. A hood sheds large leaves but can overshoot in a hard rain. A guard does not add capacity.
Do gutter guards stop overflow?
Only if the overflow was caused by debris. If the gutter is a 5-inch trough under a large roof, water can still go over the top. A 6-inch gutter carries about 110 gallons a minute, against about 74 for a 5-inch.
Should guards go on before the fascia is sound?
No. Guards and gutters hang on the fascia. A soft board should be repaired first, or the new cover pulls away with the old gutter.
